A Museum of Organ Construction in Ostheim?
Organ construction in Ostheim can look back on a 400-year tradition. Famous organ makers like Johann Ernst Döring, Johann Georg Markert or the brothers Otto und Louis Hoffmann lived and worked in the town. Some of these established firms still active today. Organs from Ostheim are found today not only in the region, but also in all parts of Germany. The Museum of Organ Construction was founded in 1994 and is part of this tradition which has shaped Ostheim. It is located in the extensively renovated rooms of Hanstein Castle, a medieval feudal house which took on its present form at the end of the 16th century with Cuntz von der Tann’s building in Renaissance style in which he installed a library, a music room and a study room for astronomy, all for the pursuit of arts and knowledge. The Museum of Organ Construction perpetuates this aim and a fascinating interaction has developed between place and theme, between rich historical ambient and valuable instruments.
The Museum is supported by a registered benevolent association dedicated to the research and presentation of international organ history from the beginnings to the present day. The new concept and layout completed in 2008 is a major step in fulfilling these aims. But concerts, “tours in sound” and educational programmes for children and families all contribute to realising the goals. This specialist Museum enjoys a great international reputation amongst experts.
